Bungalow Heaven's Vintage Stoves: Repair, Don't Rip Out

I get a particular kind of phone call from the blocks between Washington and Orange Grove, roughly Lake to Hill. Bungalow Heaven. The caller almost apologizes: “It’s an old stove. A really old stove. Do you even work on those?”

Yes. Gladly. And before you let anyone talk you into hauling it to the curb, let me explain why that stove is probably the best appliance in your house.

Why Pasadena has so many of these

Bungalow Heaven is a landmark district full of Craftsman homes built between 1905 and 1930, and the same housing stock runs through Madison Heights and Garfield Heights. A lot of those kitchens got their “modern” range in the 1940s or 50s, and here’s the thing: nobody ever needed to replace it. An O’Keefe & Merritt or a Wedgewood from that era is a 400-pound assembly of cast iron, porcelain, and chrome with maybe six moving parts. There’s no control board to fry. No membrane keypad to wear out. The failure modes are mechanical, and mechanical things can be fixed.

I’ve serviced O’Keefe & Merritts in Bungalow Heaven that have outlived three water heaters, two roofs, and every refrigerator the house has ever owned.

What actually fails on a vintage range

People assume old stoves fail in mysterious ways. They don’t. After enough of these, the list is short and predictable.

Oven thermostats. The classic complaint: “the oven runs hot” or “I set 350 and cookies burn at the edges.” These ranges use a hydraulic thermostat with a capillary bulb inside the oven cavity. The fluid in that capillary slowly leaks or degrades over decades, and calibration drifts. Sometimes recalibration fixes it. Sometimes the thermostat needs rebuilding or replacement, and rebuilt Robertshaw units for these stoves do exist. This is the single most common repair I do on them.

Safety valves. Many of these ovens have a thermally operated safety valve that only opens gas flow once the pilot proves it’s lit. When the valve’s mercury-tube sensor fails, the oven simply won’t fire even though the pilot looks fine. Good news: the stove failing safe is the system working. Bad news: you’re not baking until it’s replaced.

Burner venturis and orifices. Seventy years of grease, spider webs (genuinely, spiders love gas orifices), and crumbs will clog the air-mixing tubes. Symptom: lazy yellow flames instead of crisp blue ones, soot on pot bottoms, uneven simmer. The fix is disassembly and cleaning, plus adjusting the air shutters. Cheap repair, dramatic difference.

Oven door springs and hinges. If the door drops open with a clang or won’t stay shut, the springs have stretched or a hinge has worn. A door that doesn’t seal costs you oven temperature and wastes gas. Springs are replaceable; so is the woven door gasket.

The griddle. Most O’Keefe & Merritts have a center “Grillevator” griddle, and most of the ones I see are seized solid under a geological layer of carbonized grease. Freeing one up is dirty work but not complicated. Once cleaned and re-seasoned, that griddle is the best pancake surface you will ever own.

Pilot assemblies. Pilots go out, get gunked up, or burn weak. Weak pilots cause slow oven ignition and, on stoves with automatic top-burner lighting, burners that click into flame reluctantly or not at all.

The pilot light question

Standing pilots burn gas around the clock. On a range with an oven pilot and top pilots, figure roughly $8 to $15 a month in gas depending on rates, plus a little unwanted heat in an August kitchen.

Some owners ask about converting to electronic ignition. It can be done on certain models, but I’ll be honest: I usually talk people out of it. The conversion adds electrical components to a stove whose whole virtue is having none, it isn’t cheap, and it changes how the stove behaves during a power outage. A vintage range with standing pilots keeps cooking when the grid doesn’t. Ask anyone in Pasadena who cooked through a windstorm blackout on their Wedgewood while the neighbors’ induction cooktops sat dark.

My usual advice: keep the pilots, have them adjusted properly so they’re not running rich, and accept the small gas cost as the price of a stove with no electronics to die.

Repair versus restoration — know which one you’re buying

There’s a difference between what I do and what a restoration shop does, and it matters for your budget.

Restorers strip the stove to bare metal, re-porcelain the body, re-chrome the trim, and rebuild every valve. The results are gorgeous. They’re also $3,500 to $8,000-plus and the stove leaves your house for weeks or months.

We repair. I come to your kitchen in Bungalow Heaven, fix the thermostat, clean the venturis, replace the safety valve, free the griddle, and leave the same day. Your stove keeps its patina and keeps cooking. If you eventually want the full showroom treatment, a mechanically sound stove is a cheaper restoration candidate anyway.

If a caller wants re-chroming, I refer out. If a restoration shop’s customer just needs a valve, they sometimes refer to people like me. Different jobs.

The parts scavenging reality

Nobody manufactures new O’Keefe & Merritt thermostats on an assembly line. Parts come from three places: rebuilt components (thermostats and safety valves are the big ones), new-old-stock that surfaces from closed shops, and donor stoves. Southern California is actually the best place in the country to own one of these, because so many survived here. A part that’s unobtainium in Ohio turns up in a Fontana garage within a month.

What this means practically: common repairs are straightforward, but an oddball part might take a couple weeks to source. I’d rather tell you that upfront than promise same-day everything.

The annual safety check every vintage gas range needs

This is the part I wish more owners took seriously. Once a year, a vintage range should get:

  1. A leak test on every fitting and valve stem with electronic detection or leak solution. Valve-stem grease dries out over decades and seepage there is the most common leak point.
  2. Flame quality inspection. Yellow-tipping or lifting flames mean incomplete combustion, which means carbon monoxide.
  3. Flue and vent check. The oven vents through a bezel at the back; blockage pushes combustion products into the kitchen.
  4. Pilot and safety valve verification. Confirm the oven actually shuts off gas when the pilot is out.
  5. Door seal check, since a leaking gasket changes combustion behavior inside the oven.

None of this is exotic. It’s an hour of work. And a CO detector in the kitchen is non-negotiable with any gas range, vintage or new.

Why a serviced 1948 range outbakes the new stuff

A properly tuned O’Keefe & Merritt oven is a thick-walled, well-insulated box with a big burner and enormous thermal mass. It preheats slower than a modern range and then holds temperature like a masonry oven. Bread bakers in Madison Heights know this. The broilers are ferocious. The simmer, once the venturis are clean and the valves adjusted, is more controllable than most modern sealed burners.

Modern ranges are better at self-cleaning and Wi-Fi. That’s about it.

What it costs

Rough numbers from recent Pasadena jobs, parts and labor:

  • Diagnostic and safety inspection: $95–$150
  • Burner cleaning and venturi service, all burners: $150–$300
  • Thermostat recalibration: $120–$180; rebuilt thermostat installed: $350–$600
  • Oven safety valve replacement: $300–$500
  • Door springs and gasket: $150–$275
  • Griddle un-seizing and service: $150–$250
  • Full mechanical tune-up (everything above except major parts): $400–$700

Compare that to $1,200 for a disposable new range with a five-year control board, or $4,000-plus for a pro-style one. The math favors the stove already sitting in your kitchen.
